Program Educational Objectives And Student Outcomes

Mission:

The mission of the Civil Engineering Program is to create and administer a quality civil engineering program designed to achieve four major goals 

1. Educate a new generation of civil engineers to meet the challenges, demands and expectations of society;
2. Cultivate, enrich and promote scholarship, responsibility and service among our graduates;
3. Disseminate new knowledge;
4. Nurture interdisciplinary education for solving the problems facing an ever-changing society.

The Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) are as follows:

Within a few years of graduation, the graduates of the Civil Engineering Program at the University of New Haven will:

1. Practice the profession of civil engineering, make progress toward certification as licensed Professional Engineers and/or pursue graduate studies
2. Serve society and the civil engineering profession through involvement in community and professional organizations
3. Pursue life-long education through professional training and/or independent inquiry and study

The Student Outcomes (SOs) are as follows:

In order to achieve its mission and educational objectives the Civil Engineering Faculty must ensure that graduates have attained the following program outcomes:

1. an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering
2. an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data
3. an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability
4. an ability to function on multidisciplinary teams
5. an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems
6. an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility
7. an ability to communicate effectively
8. the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context
9. a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning
10. a knowledge of contemporary issues
11. an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.
