About

    Dr. Whitley joind UNH in September 1979, and has served as chair of Mathematics Department during 1979-1984 and 1995-2007. He has led and participated in faculty-student seminars in Chaos and Fractals (twice), Computer Programming in PASCAL, and The Mathematics of Rubik's Cube. He is a past chair of the Northeastern Section of the Mathematical Association of America.

    Besides thinking about and doing mathematics and teaching mathematics, Dr. Whitley likes to read (science fiction and history mostly), hike, and take photographs.

    Some Deep Thoughts: Dr. Whitley went into mathematics because he likes the challenge of solving difficult problems, and because it is constantly changing.  He enjoys learning new things and developing new skills.  He became a teacher because he really enjoys working with young people.  Life is a constant learning process.  One of the most important goals of education should be to help people learn how to learn and to help them learn how to adapt to new situations.
