"Too Big to Fall, Too Big to Question"

Dr. Allen Sack discussed problems with college sports in the wake of the Penn State scandal

Dr. Allen Sack, professor of sports management at the University of New Haven recently presented “Too Big to Fall, Too Big to Question: Why a Congressional Hearing is Necessary to Reform Big-Time College Sports”.

Dr. Sack has been an outspoken member of the sports management industry and most recently published an article about the Penn State case in the Christian Science Monitor titled “After Penn State scandal, Congress should make NCAA put students, education first.” In the article he writes,

"The NCAA and its member institutions are the architects of the “athletic culture” that by NCAA President Mark Emmert’s own admission has become “too big to fail, indeed, too big to even challenge.” As recently as 2006, former NCAA president Myles Brand extolled the virtues of commercialism in collegiate sport in his State of the Association Address. What he did not explain was how to keep the profit-hungry monster from devouring education."

A former athlete himself, having played on Notre Dame's 1966 National Championship football team, Dr. Sack has been active in the sports industry serving as director of the federally funded Center for Athletes' Rights and Education, conducting research related to the sports management industry and establishing the Institute for Sports Management at University of New Haven.

The event is free and open to the public.
