Why Choose the UNH Community Psychology Program?

Ten….No, ELEVEN Reasons for Choosing the UNH Community Psychology Program

  1. FLEXIBIILITY
UNH provides a distinctive applied psychology education. Three program concentrations enable students to tailor their curriculum to meet their individual needs and professional goals. UNH  allows full-time students to complete the program in two years. The program allows students to simultaneously complete their degrees, obtain practical experience, work full-time or part-time, and meet financial obligations. Classes are offered during evening hours to accommodate working students.

  2. PROGRAM CONCENTRATIONS
    • The Community-Clinical Services concentration prepares students for careers in clinical, mental health, and related human-service settings.
    • The Program Development concentration trains students to plan and administer both traditional and non-traditional programs and services.
    • The Forensic Psychology concentration equips students with the skills needed to work with offenders in community-based settings in the criminal justice system.
  3. INTERNSHIPS
Supervised internships in human service organizations constitute a central component of the UNH program. The internship experience plays a key role in helping students find rewarding professional positions. Students choose from an unusually rich array of community settings that provide opportunities for extensive skill development, networking, and work experience in clinical services, consultation, and program development.

  4. PROFESSIONAL COUNSELING PREPARATION
The CP program offers coursework to prepare students for professional licensure. Our program offers 45 of the 60 total credits needed for a professional counseling license. This does not guarantee licensure because there are other state requirements, but our courses do cover many of the topic areas relevant to licensure.

  5. FINANCIAL AID
Our program makes it possible for students to hold full-time jobs, assistantships, and internship positions while earning their degrees. UNH offers a wide variety of teaching, research, and administrative assistantships, and Guaranteed Student Loans are available to both part-time and full-time students.

  6. FACULTY
Our faculty members have years of experience as practicing community and clinical psychologists in both the private and public sectors, and bring with them a broad range of teaching and research interests. A relaxed and informal atmosphere among faculty and students complements small classes and a challenging learning process.

  7. STUDENT BODY
Students come to UNH from all regions of the U.S., as well as other countries, and bring with them a wide range of academic, human service, and life experiences. While at UNH, students develop strong connections with fellow students, faculty, and the profession.

  8. LOCATION
The Greater New Haven area offers many cultural and recreational activities, as well as the world's best pizza. The beaches of Long Island Sound are less than two miles from campus, and the New England countryside is only a short drive away. New York City, Boston, Cape Cod, and skiing in Vermont are also convenient trips.

  9. CAREERS
Graduates from our program obtain challenging and rewarding positions in private, non-profit, and government agencies and programs. Most graduates obtain positions within several months of earning their degree. UNH graduates become a leading force for change and excellence in many of the domains of community psychology.

  10. BEYOND THE MASTER’S
Graduates of our program are well-prepared to pursue doctoral work in community psychology, clinical psychology, and related fields.
