Online Courses Through OCICU Consortium

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT UNH 2013 SUMMER COURSES OFFERED THROUGH THE ONLINE CONSORTIUM OF INDEPENDENT COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES (OCICU)

Online courses with a section designation of “OCICU” means that a course is offered through UNH as part of our membership in the “Online Consortium of Independent Colleges & Universities” (OCICU) which is an academic consortium in which member institutions share online courses and programs. Although OCICU courses are facilitated by participating provider institutions, not UNH, students register for OCICU course(s), pay tuition, receive grades through UNH’s Matrix Student Information System and on your UNH transcript, just as you would any other UNH course, even though you are actually taking the course through another college.  Students from other colleges and universities are also registered for these online courses through their home institution.

  • Students taking OCICU courses through UNH are required to take all OCICU courses for credit. Grades of Pass/Fail, Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory or Audit will not be accepted by UNH.
  • There are different registration deadlines, term starting and ending dates and drop/withdrawal dates and policies for OCICU courses based on each specific provider college’s policy. The specific OCICU provider college’s policies supersede UNH policies.
  •  It is important that students review the table below to be sure that you are informed about each provider college’s specific process requirements and schedule. You can identify the corresponding OCICU course number and provider college on the academic summer schedule that is posted on our website.  They are not listed in Matrix. Check the academic schedule for the specific term and UNH course you are registered for.
  • Students must register and officially drop OCICU courses in Matrix. However, students cannot drop themselves from summer courses in Matrix once the term has begun. If you wish to drop or withdraw from an OCICU course once the term has started, you must contact the UNH Registrar’s Office to be officially dropped/withdrawn from the OCICU course in Matrix. You can email unhregistrar@newhaven.edu or call them at (203) 932-7309. Once you are dropped from an OCICU course in Matrix, UNH will then officially drop you from your OCICU course with the consortium. Students cannot request a withdrawal or a grade of “W” from an instructor for an OCICU course.  Students who do not follow the proper drop procedure when dropping an OCICU course will be issued a grade of “F” for the course by the provider college. No other form of drop including, but not limited to, notifying an instructor or provider institution, or failing to log in or post for course sessions, will constitute formal withdrawal from a course.
  • Students must log in, participate and post a message to the discussion forum by the 7th day of their course or they will be automatically dropped from the course for non-participation.
  • UNH employees and their dependents who receive tuition remission benefits must pay an OCICU registration fee of $750 to take OCICU courses during the Summer of 2013. Contact the College of Lifelong & eLearning for details.

Once you have registered in Matrix for an online OCICU course, UNH will send your registration request to the appropriate OCICU provider school for processing. They will begin to process registrations and notify students according to their “Registration Processing Begins” dates listed above. Please note that courses will have a UNH course code in Matrix and a different corresponding OCICU course code and title with the provider institution.  When your registration request has been processed, the provider college will send to your UNH email address an email containing your login ID and password for course access at their school. You are not officially registered in the course until you receive this confirmation email from the provider school.  Remember, you will use the user ID, password and learning platform (Example: Blackboard) that is assigned to you by the provider college offering each course and not your UNH ID, password or UNH Blackboard account. Please read that email carefully.  The email address we will provide to OCICU to contact you about your course is your “unh.newhaven.edu” email address. Personal email addresses will not be used so be sure to check your UNH email.   You must notify the provider college’s technical support help desk, not UNH, if you are having problems with their learning platform.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR ONLINE OCICU COURSE:

While waiting for your registration confirmation email, go www.ocicu.org/studentaccess.asp  to begin preparing for your course. Be sure to bookmark this site. Once on the site:

  • Review the “OCICU Student Guidebook”.
  • Read “Getting Started”.
  • Scroll down to the bottom of the page to “OCICU / University of New Haven Courses” and click on your course link.

From your course link, you can review all the information that is necessary to prepare for successfully completing your online OCICU course. This includes the following:

  • Information on how to order books for the course. (Course materials should be ordered at least 10 days prior to the course start date. Shipping time is normally 7-10 days; however overnight shipping is available for an additional charge). Do not order books until you receive confirmation from the provider school that your course registration has been accepted.
  • How to review the system requirements to access and use your online course.  If you have course specific questions or technical problems you should contact the provider school’s help desk directly with problems/questions, not UNH. Their contact information is included.
  • A link to a demonstration course to familiarize yourself with the online forum, posting to the forum, etc. before beginning your course.
  • Access to your course online.
If you have any questions about OCICU courses, please contact the College of Lifelong & eLearning at (203) 932-7180 or email Lifelong_eLearn@newhaven.edu.
