Mr. Bartels has served on several boards and committees for Cornell University, including the Committee on Alumni Trustee Nominations and the Cornell Council, and most recently as the vice president for the Class of 1971. He is a member of the administrative board of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology in Ithaca, N.Y., on the board of trustees for the Paleontological Research Institution, also in Ithaca, and is former counsel and president of the Greenwich, Conn. Audubon Society. Mr. Bartels was the vice chair of the board of governors of the University of New Haven for six years and was named chair in 2012. He is the son of Henry and Nancy Bartels, who are among the University's most generous benefactors. Among a number of initiatives, the Bartels fund the Bartels Fellowship and an endowed scholarship, and have made significant gifts for the renovation and refurbishment of Bartels Hall, the campus center. UNH awarded him an honorary doctorate of humane letters in 2011.
