Faculty Engagement Labs

Welcome to the University of New Haven Faculty Engagement Labs.  As an optional, non-credit lab within the Freshman Experience program, students are provided with a unique opportunity to engage in a personalized experience with a faculty or staff member outside of the classroom. The faculty and staff of UNH have volunteered to serve as mentors to the first year students and help them acclimate to their new environment. They have developed one of a kind labs to allow the students to share their academic and personal interests. The labs will provide students with individual attention and promote opportunities for social, cultural and personal growth. These labs are not a substitute for Freshman Experience Seminar.

To provide varying activities to facilitate personal connections between the students and faculty, the University of New Haven is offering the following Faculty Engagement Labs for first year students:

  • Conversational Labs:  Lectures in the classroom do not always allow for an opportunity for students to talk about something of interest to them.  Conversational Labs are designed to allow students to be the conversation starters.  Students and faculty will share their personal, career and academic interests outside of the classroom over coffee or dinner.
  • Experiential Labs: As a new student on campus, it may be difficult to find opportunities to explore “out of the box” and in the community.  Experiential Labs are designed to provide students with a chance to connect with faculty out of the classroom and share opportunities for cultural development, career building, academic service learning, and research.
  • Global Labs: Students might learn about a new culture in class, but how often do they get to visit another country and experience it first-hand? Global Labs are designed for students and faculty to meet and discuss interests in travel and share personal experiences throughout the semester.   In January 2013, students taking part in the Global Labs will take a journey to another country and learn about a new culture through educational and hands-on experiences.
