Online Courses offered through OCICU
Summer 2011, Fall 2011 and Spring 2012

UNH is offering an exciting new way for part-time students to take on-line courses in an accelerated format!! Online courses with a section number designation of "OCICU" are courses offered through UNH as part of our membership in the "Online Consortium of Independent Colleges & Universities" (OCICU), which is an academic consortium in which member institutions share online courses and programs. Although OCICU courses are facilitated by participating provider institutions, you will register for your course(s), pay tuition, and receive grades through UNH's Matrix Student Information System just as you would any other course at UNH. . Students taking these courses through UNH are required to take all OCICU courses for credit. Grades of Pass/Fail or Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory will not be accepted.

OCICU courses are open to any UNH undergraduate students (full-time or part-time) during the Summer I or Summer II terms but are only available to part-time evening students only during the regular academic year.

Part-time non-degree students taking courses at UNH are also eligible to enroll in online OCICU courses.

We encourage you to give online courses a try! While there are distinct differences between classes taught online and those taught in the traditional face-to-face classroom, most students are pleasantly surprised by the richness of their online learning experience. Learning how to effectively utilize technology and communicate in today's electronic environment is an important skill that plays a critical role in today's world. Online classes give students the chance to interact on a daily basis with both the instructor and fellow students, as opposed to just once a week in a traditional class. This facilitates the exchange of ideas and information in a richer, timely and more efficient manner. The flexibility provided by online courses is also a great option for today's student with a busy schedule and it enables you to earn UNH credits from home or anywhere with an Internet connection.

Each OCICU course has an alpha prefix at the end of the course # which indicates the college that is actually providing the online course. (Example: COM400-RU is offered through Regis University.) There are different registration deadlines, term starting and ending dates and drop/withdrawal dates for OCICU courses based on each specific provider's policy. It is important that you review the table below to be sure that you are informed about each college's specific requirements. You can identify the corresponding OCICU course number and provider college on the academic schedule that is posted on our website at www.newhaven.edu/academics. Check the academic schedule for the specific term and UNH course you are interested in.

RU = Regis University, SLU = Saint Leo University, SNH = Southern New Hampshire University, UIW = University of the Incarnate Word

All you need to do to register for an OCICU course is to login into your Matrix account and select one of the UNH courses that has a section number of "OCICU". * The Registration Processing Date in Matrix is the date announced by the UNH Registrar's Office for the opening of registration for each term. The Registration Processing Date listed above for OCICU is the date that each individual provider school will begin to accept student registrations from UNH. (NOTE: Students from other colleges are also registering for these online courses and their enrollment is not reflected in the Matrix student enrollments). Once you have registered in Matrix for an online OCICU course, UNH will send your registration request to the appropriate OCICU provider school for processing. Please note that courses will have a UNH course code and course title as well as an OCICU course code and title. When your registration request has been processed, the provider school will send to your UNH email address an email containing your login ID and password for course access at their college. You are not officially in the course until you receive this confirmation email. Remember, you will use the user ID, password and learning platform (IE: Blackboard) that is assigned to you by the provider college offering each course and not your UNH ID, password or UNH Blackboard account. Please read that email carefully. The email address we will provide to OCICU to contact you about your course is your "unh.newhaven.edu" email address. Personal email addresses will not be used. If you have any questions about your UNH email account please contact studenttechsupport@newhaven.edu.

While waiting for your registration confirmation email, go www.ocicu.org/studentaccess.asp to begin preparing for your course. Be sure to bookmark this site. Once on the site:

  1. Review the "OCICU Student Guidebook".
  2.
  3. Read "Getting Started"
  4.
  5. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to "OCICU / University of New Haven Courses" and click on your course link.

From your course link, you can review all the information that is necessary to prepare for successfully completing your online OCICU course. This includes the following:

·         Information on how to order books for the course. (Course materials should be ordered at least 10 days prior to the course start date. Shipping time is normally 7-10 days; however overnight shipping is available for an additional charge). Do not order books until you receive confirmation from the provider school that your course registration has been accepted..

·         How to review the system requirements to access and use your online course. If you have course specific questions or technical problems you should contact the provider school's help desk directly with problems/questions, not UNH. Their contact information is included.

·         A link to a demonstration course to familiarize yourself with the online forum, posting to the forum, etc. before beginning your course.

·         Access to your course online

Students must log in, participate and post a message to the discussion forum by the 7th day of their course or they will be dropped from the course for non-participation.

NOTE: UNH employees and their dependents who receive tuition remission benefits must pay an OCICU registration fee. Contact College of Lifelong & eLearning for details.

If you have any questions about registering for OCICU courses, please contact College of Lifelong & eLearning at (203) 932-7180 or email lifelong_elearn@newhaven.edu.
