Art and Design Academies

The University of New Haven’s Summer Youth Academies Series is excited to introduce a new Art and Design Academy Series for Summer 2021! Students may choose to enroll in either one, two, three, or all four courses below to advance their portfolio and explore the creative fields within the arts.

Logotype Design
Cost: $400

July 12 - 16

This workshop will introduce students to logotype creation. By exploring different real-world creative methodologies, participants will go through the design of a brand’s logotype. The workshop will include lectures about branding and technical tutorials (both digital and analog.) Individual and group critiques will provide clear feedback for participants. The workshop will culminate with a feedback session with a renowned industry professional.

This course will be taught virtually via Zoom.

Concept Art
Cost: $500

July 19 - 23

Character design and environment design techniques play an integral part in Concept Art for gaming, animation, and film. This class will provide academy students with the skills and tools to create their own realistic characters and settings. The instructor will cover professional illustration and digital painting methods in great depth, and will introduce students to the work of notable concept artists in the field.

This course will be taught in-person on the University of New Haven’s Main Campus.

Introduction to Interior Design
Cost: $500

July 26 - 30

This class is an introduction to interior design with an emphasis on residential. Students will learn essential design skills including the principles and elements of design, the use and application of color and space planning standards, including an understanding of public and private space. In a residential project, students will assemble furniture, materials, textures and color schemes into a coherent design. Basic drafting skills are taught and students will create a rendered floor plan, elevation and in addition, a design concept board to express their design intent.

Drawing 1
Cost: $500

August 2 - 6

This is an introductory course stressing basic drawing skills. We will begin with line and line variation and move through understanding relative scale and spatial relationships on a 2-D surface. The student will be introduced to various techniques of creating lights and darks to create the illusion of three dimensional forms in space and dynamic drawings. Basic principles of design elements of perspective and negative space will be included as drawing aides that will lead the student to create well composed drawings.
