Calling All Fire Fighters!

This summer experience is a week-long fire science academy offered by the Henry Lee College, Fire Science and Emergency Management Department. Participates in the program discover the exciting field of firefighting. Students are exposed to the types of positions available in today’s fire industry in a university environment. University of New Haven faculty and staff lead a variety of activates exposing students to today’s fire service.

Some activities include:

  • What does it take to be a firefighter, and how to prepare yourself?
  • What are the entrance requirements: physical and mental
  • Protective clothing discussion, demo
  • Fire apparatus walk through and demonstrations
  • Fire Chemistry demonstration, Sticky foam demonstration
  • Fire Arson Investigation presentation methods used today
  • Paramedic training, what does it take to save lives
  • Trip to a Fire Academy
  • Students will Investigate a fire and present their findings

Participants will have an opportunity to learn about the careers available to them in the fire field. They will get a chance to use their skills learned to investigate a real fire scene. University of New Haven faculty and staff supervise all classroom and project work. They have outstanding backgrounds in many different areas of the fire service. Their experience combined with a genuine interest in working with the future leaders who show an interest in the fire service.

Requirements:

  • Participants must be entering 9th through 12th grade
  • Participants should have a demonstrated interest in helping others in need
