Soaring through SOAR

Release Date:
8/2/2012 12:00 AM

After much anticipation for many incoming freshmen the day had arrived! SOAR (Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration) was here! This was a time for students new to the University of New Haven to begin their college experience by meeting their classmates, learning about academics and student life, and becoming acquainted with the campus. Charger pride filled the grounds as new students and parents entered campus prepared for the university’s two day program to learn about their new journey ahead!

Students were assigned to their orientation leaders (OLs), who are current students at UNH! During the first day of SOAR, students participated in placement exams to assist in placing them within classes best suited for them. Students were then broken up into smaller groups to get to know each other better! From icebreakers to team building activities, the laughter and smiles brightened up the campus! As the Class of 2016 made their way through campus, the students were advised of opportunities within clubs, organizations, student life, and the expectations of what it means to be a Charger! Students were also advised of the many support services available such as the First-Year Success Center and the Center for Learning Resources. The day concluded with some relaxing and fun activities and entertainment.

As the sun came up on day two of SOAR, excited students met individually with UNH academic advisors to register for their fall semester classes. Students compared schedules and high-fived one another when they realized they shared some the same class times! Soon students realized that the two-day event was coming to an end and they sadly said their goodbyes to their new friends. Hugs were given and pictures were taken, soon to be tagged on Facebook!

As the students enjoyed their time on campus, many parents joined the fun to familiarize themselves with the University of New Haven! Through informative presentations and group break-out sessions, parents became more comfortable with the transition to college life. Each of the six SOAR sessions wrapped up with parents and students joining one another over lunch with the faculty and staff at the University of New Haven. The SOAR events this year only confirm how fun and energetic the University of New Haven campus is!
