Parade - Condé Nast (July 14): “OMG: Does Texting Hurt Kids’ Spelling?"
Recent studies have shown that texting has no proven negative impact on literacy and reading ability. In fact, researchers say, the use of so-called “textisms” (shorthand like u for you, or ppl for people), may actually improve students’ spelling. Nancy Niemi, member of UNH’s education faculty says, “You want your kids to learn that reading isn’t something that’s just associated with school, it can be a pleasurable activity that they can enjoy for the rest of their lives.”
