James Monahan, associate professor of criminal justice at UNH said scenes from the riot control efforts in Ferguson made it seem as if demonstrators were up against an army. Monahan said people seeing police outfitted as soldiers could think that criminals are out of control. Police with assault rifles and armored trucks is more a sign that the police department fears the community and has lost touch with it. “You can’t serve your people with tanks and machine guns,” Monahan said. “The last thing these departments need is this weaponry.”
