Green Hydrogen, Clean Power

The University of New Haven (UNH) Tagliatela College of Engineering will host a free public lecture, “Co-production of Clean Power and Green Hydrogen to Maximize the Value of Solar, Wind and Biomass Energy,” by Pinakin Patel, Director of Special Systems and Research at Fuel Cell Energy, Inc. Pinakin’s lecture is part of the UNH Spring 2012 Alvine Engineering Professional Effectiveness and Enrichment Program.

There is a strong growing interest in development of domestic sources of clean and green energy to enhance national security and create domestic jobs. While, solar, wind and biomass energy offer potentially attractive options, they bring new challenges for the utility industry and the emerging Smart Grid industry. Direct Fuel Cell (DFC) power plants offer a very attractive solution to mitigate these challenges, and to maximize the overall value proposition. These DFC power plants operate directly on hydrocarbon fuels including waste-derived bio-fuels with virtually no-emissions of criteria pollutants. On-site distributed generation reduce the grid-congestion and increase overall energy security. Co-production of hydrogen can be used for fuel cell vehicles, as well as to meet the peak electrical demand for the local community.

Pinakin Patel has been actively engaged in the development of all types of fuel cells for over three decades. His technical innovations include development of internal reforming fuel cell technology, advance separation technology for hydrogen co-production and solid state compressor for hydrogen. He led collaborative research and development efforts with many reputed international companies such as Sanyo and Mitsubishi in Japan, Haldor Topsoe and Elkraft Power Co. in Denmark, and Global thermal Electric in Canada, with a cumulative value exceeding 300 million dollars. He led the design team for the first 2 MW fuel cell power plant for demonstration at Santa Clara, California. Mr. Patel is currently the Director of Special Systems and Research at FCE focusing on advance technology development for co-production of green hydrogen and clean power from municipal waste-water. Mr. Patel holds 15 U.S. patents and has authored over 100 publications and seminar presentations in the US, Canada, Japan, Europe and India.
