WEST HAVEN, CONN. – The University of New Haven’s master’s degree program in the management of sports industries in the College of Business has been ranked among the best in the world.

The program was ranked fourth in United States by Sport Business International, an on-line and print sports news group.  UNH is ranked behind Ohio University, the University of Northern Colorado and UMass. The program also was ranked number 13 in the world.

The ranking is the first-ever authoritative assessment of teaching in the sector of postgraduate education catering to the business of sport, according to Sport Business International. The ranking assessed courses that were master’s level and above that cover the business of sport, and have been running consecutively for more than three years.

“The ranking reflects positively on our faculty, students and especially our alumni who are working in key positions in the sports industry all over the world,” said UNH President Steven Kaplan.  “Sports is a $200 billion industry worldwide and has all of the complexities and sustainability issues that major global corporations face.  Our vision continues to remain focused on nurturing the industry's future leaders.”

The UNH program in sport industries celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2010. There are about 250 programs nationwide that offer similar programs.

“Sports is a huge, growing international industry,” said Professor Allen Sack, interim dean of the College of Business and a founder of the management of sports industries program at UNH.   “It requires skilled business people and that’s what we specialize in producing at the University of New Haven.”

There are more than 300 alumni of the UNH program, which offers both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sports management.
