Miss UNH/Miss New Haven County

WEST HAVEN, CONN. --- University of New Haven students and young women from across New Haven County will compete for scholarships and the chance to become Miss Connecticut and even Miss America at the Miss UNH/Miss New Haven County Scholarship Pageant at Dodds Hall Theater at UNH at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 2.

The two young women crowned Miss UNH and Miss New Haven County will each win a $3,000 annual undergraduate scholarship to UNH, the only university in New England to offer the scholarships.

Six UNH students will compete for the Miss UNH crown, and seven young women will compete in the Miss New Haven County contest. The young women will compete in talent, swimsuit and evening wear competitions and answer an on-stage interview question. Earlier in the day, each contestant will be interviewed by a panel of six judges on the UNH campus.

Ashley Abate, a UNH admissions counselor who received a B.S. from UNH in 2007, and was Miss New Haven County 2007, said Connecticut pageant officials are grateful for UNH’s scholarship support and hope that the university’s participation will influence other colleges and universities in the Northeast to provide similar scholarships to young women.

The scholarships are in addition to any merit-based aid that students are already receiving or may receive from UNH. The Miss UNH competition is open only to UNH students.

Those competing for Miss New Haven County must be between the ages of 17-24 and live work or attend school in the state.

The Miss Connecticut Pageant is an official preliminary contest of the Miss America Pageant, the nation's leading beauty competition. Abate said it is the world's largest provider of scholarship assistance to young women, with $45 million in cash and scholarships awarded since its inception. This past year, Miss America won a $50,000 annual scholarship.

The Miss Connecticut Scholarship Corporation is a nonprofit organization that awards scholarships to outstanding young women to help advance them academically and professionally. Abate said participants have gone on to achieve major success in diverse fields including medicine, law, business, broadcast journalism, theater and politics.

In addition to the contestants, Abate said other young women who are part of the Miss America organization will perform during the pageant. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for UNH students with a UNH ID.

“It should be a very exciting night,” she said.
