Quarantine and Isolation Guidance for Students

This guide was developed by the COVID Task Force to assist students and parents in the quarantine and isolation processes, both on and off campus. This page was updated on March 3, 2021.

There are three definitions that will be helpful to understanding how students will be directed:

  • Precautionary Quarantine: Students who were exposed to a symptomatic individual will be asked to quarantine temporarily as a precaution until that individual is cleared from isolation by Health Services. Contacts of contacts with a COVID+ individual will also be asked to enter precautionary quarantine until the contact with which they reside has tested negative.
  • Quarantine: Students who were exposed to a COVID+ individual for 15 minutes or more without a mask and less than 6 feet apart are contacts for a COVID+ individual will be directed to quarantine for 10 days after the date of exposure. Students who share a bathroom with a COVID+ individual or are members of a "family unit” who reside together will be required to quarantine as well.
  • Isolation: Students who have tested positive for COVID-19 must isolate. Residential students that have tested positive for COVID-19 will need to isolate on-campus or off-campus. Commuter students that have tested positive for COVID-19 will need to isolate off-campus.

Reporting Procedure

Students experiencing symptoms should report those symptoms to CoVerified. Then, students should contact Campus Health Services regarding symptomatic testing.

Students who have been exposed to someone who is COVID+ should email the COVID Task Force at COVIDTaskForce@newhaven.edu to notify them about their exposure. Emails should include their name, student ID, and date of exposure.

Isolation Relocation Procedure

Residential students will be moved to isolation housing between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. daily. Students may receive positive test results from Yale New Haven Health in their MyChart account outside of these hours. In that case, the student should pack for a move to isolation the following morning, and should be prepared to move to isolation housing at 8 a.m. Students should not leave their room for any reason until contacted by a University staff member for the move to isolation housing.

COVID-19 Vaccination Quarantine Exemption

Per CDC guidance, persons who are fully vaccinated within the last 90 days do not need to quarantine. Proof of vaccination will be required before restrictions will be lifted.
