Definition of a Bloodborne Pathogen: Pathogenic microorganisms that are present in human blood and can cause disease in humans. These pathogens include, but are not limited to, hepatitis B virus (HBV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
Training is provided yearly during the Fall semester for employees that may come in contact with Bloodborne Pathogens.
Action Steps For Buildings:
- For any situation of this nature, call Campus Police (203-932-7014) immediately and provide details (where, what is the issue, etc.).
- If Campus Police or Facilities do not respond in a reasonable time (within 30-45 min.) follow up with Campus Police again.
- Do not handle or touch anything.
- Seal off the area immediately and keep people away. If possible cover the substance with a towel or paper towels.
- In the event a community area is contaminated (i.e. bathroom, stairwell, etc.) hang signs to direct students and faculty to another community facility.
