Appellate Court Brings
Criminal Trial to Campus
The Connecticut Appellate Court will be on campus to try two actual criminal cases starting at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 24. The cases will last about one hour each, with discussion sessions for the audience conducted by attorneys while the judges are in “chambers” after each case is heard. Sign a Beam, Witness it Being Placed on
UNH’s New Residence Hall at Sept. 25 Event
All are invited to sign the beam from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 25 behind Maxcy Hall, adjacent to the construction site. Then the final beam will be placed on the frame in an 11 a.m. ceremony featuring numerous dignitaries from throughout the area. Come celebrate the skill and commitment of our construction workers, along with our unparalleled growth.

New Student Housing in West Haven
Big News in Connecticut
UNH undergraduate and graduate students recently moved into a beautifully renovated townhouse complex in downtown West Haven thanks to a unique partnership between the University, the city and an area developer that was highlighted at a press conference this past Wednesday. The Savin Court complex includes 33 townhouse-style apartments that will initially house 54 students before increasing to 90 students by January. Channels 3, 8 and 30 and the New Haven Register were on hand to report how UNH’s need for additional housing to accommodate its historically large class, the Mayor’s hope to upgrade an area of West Haven, and a developer’s quick response benefited all. Share Secrets Oct. 2
Rosa Gatti, the highest-ranking woman at ESPN, the nation’s premier sports network, is the University’s 2008 Autumn Bartels Fellow. Gatti built the ESPN brand to what it is today, and she will share the secret of her success at the Bartels Lecture at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2 in Dodds Theatre. All are invited.

Russian Oil and Gas
Cleptocracies are governments – typically dictatorships – that keeps themselves viable by stealing, primarily to benefit government bureaucrats, relatives and friends. American journalist Pat Davis Szymczak, a longtime gas and oil journalist and editor-in-chief of “Oil and Gas Eurasia,” will speak on “Russia and Oil: Statecraft or Cleptocracy?” in a lecture Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 3 p.m. in the Alumni Lounge in Bartels Hall, the campus center. All are welcome. Szymczak is also founder and president of Eurasia Press, Inc.

To Remember 9-11
On Thursday, Sept. 11, a Remembrance Walk will commemorate the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001. All are invited. Participants will gather at the New Hall patio at 8:15 a.m. The procession will begin at 8:30 a.m., led by a bagpiper, President Kaplan, USGA President Louis Eswood III and an honor guard of Allingtown firefighters and members of the University Police Department. It will end at the Maxcy Quad. There, a ceremony will pay tribute to those who lost their lives that day. American flags will be available at the information desk in Bartels Hall, the campus center, for those who wish to place them at the site that day. A 9-11 video will be shown from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the information desk.

Memorial Planned for UNH Student
Who Died During Hockey Game
The University community is invited to attend the “Block the Shot Motorcycle Run” at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 13, at Seekonk Speedway in Seekonk, Mass. to remember Nathan Crowell, a UNH student who died when he was hit by a puck in the last few moments of a hockey game. Top Student Wins
National Recognition
Brittaney Obienu has been selected to be an American Chemical Society Scholar, a national award given to only about 120 students nationwide. Brittaney is majoring in Forensic Science, Mathematics and Chemistry. “She maintains an outstanding GPA and a positively infectious personality,” says Chemistry Professor Dr. Pauline M. Schwartz. “It is wonderful to know that some of our best and brightest undergraduates are among the best and brightest students across the nation.”
Emeritus Board Member
Roland Bixler Dies
Roland Bixler, 94, a devoted supporter of UNH and a member of the University’s Board of Governors since 1946, died Aug. 30. Mr. Bixler was chairman of the board from 1950 to 1971, and was elected a governor emeritus in 1992. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13 at the Church of the Redeemer, 185 Cold Spring St., New Haven.

Numerous events are planned for downtown West Haven in the next several weeks. Here are just a few:
Italian Street Festival, Sept. 13, noon to 10 p.m. Rain date: Sept. 14.
Lower Campbell Avenue’s 5th annual block party is kid-friendly with face-painting artists and other arts and crafts. Food, treats and entertainment line the streets from Captain Thomas Boulevard to Blohm Street, turning the neighborhood into a little Italy.
Apple Festival, Oct. 3, 5 p.m to 9 p.m.; Oct. 4, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Oct. 5, noon to 5 p.m., West Haven Green. rain or shine. The fifth annual festival, hosted by the First Congregational Church, celebrates with arts and crafts, food and entertainment. Other activities include an apple pie bake-off, an auction, a pumpkin-decorating contest, bake and book sales, carousel rides and hayrides.
Breast Cancer Candlelight Vigil, Oct. 10, 7 p.m., West Haven Green. Rain or shine. Part of the city’s ongoing campaign to raise awareness of breast cancer, one of America’s leading causes of cancer death among women and men, the ceremony is presented by the West Haven Breast Cancer Awareness Committee.
