Phillip Kaplan Endowed Collection
The University of New Haven Alumni Association established the Phillip Kaplan Endowment Fund in 1991 as a way to honor retiring President Phillip S. Kaplan. The annual income from the fund is designated for the acquisition and preservation of library resources in the areas of business, economics, and related disciplines: these comprise the Phillip Kaplan Endowed Collection.
Dr. Phillip S. Kaplan began teaching economics at the University of New Haven in 1959, becoming Professor in 1966. He earned his B.A. from the University of Massachusetts, his M.A. in Economics from Columbia and a Ph.D. in Political Economy from Johns Hopkins. He was active in the affairs of the University from the start, serving in many administrative posts. He was instrumental in establishing the Graduate School in 1969, and served as its first Dean before becoming University President in 1973. Dr. Kaplan was President for eighteen years, from 1973-1991, and returned to teaching at the University after he retired as President. He received the Liberty Bell Award in 1980, and, in addition to the positions mentioned earlier, served as Chair of the Department of Economics and Dean of the Business School. In 2011 the University of New Haven Board of Governors awarded Phillip S. Kaplan the status of president emeritus.
As President, Dr. Kaplan encouraged the development of new professional schools and programs. The University and campus grew from a primarily undergraduate and commuter school to an institution with an expanded residential undergraduate presence and over twenty graduate programs, including a doctoral program in management systems. Many new buildings, programs, and organizations came to be during Dr. Kaplan's presidency: the Marvin K. Peterson Library; Special Studies; Arbeiter Männerchor; Harugari, Echlin and Dodds Halls; the Psychology Building; Vieira Field; the Robert B. Dodds Athletic Field; Admissions; and many dormitories. In 1993, the new building for the School of Graduate Studies was formally named in honor of Dr. Kaplan. The Kaplan Endowed Collection is another testimonial to his service at the University.
