    Dear Class of 2021,

All graduates and their guests will be required to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test OR proof of full vaccination in order to access tickets for Commencement. Below are some important details about testing timeframes, limited on-campus testing opportunities, and how test results and vaccine records should be uploaded to CoVerified.

    Testing/Proof of Vaccination Requirement

    • All graduates must show proof of a negative COVID-19 test administered between May 14-16 OR proof of a full vaccination.
    • All guests must show proof of a negative COVID-19 test administered between May 12-16 OR proof of a full vaccination.
    • Please note: Fully vaccinated is defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as individuals who are at least 14 days past receiving the 2nd dose in a 2-dose series (Moderna, Pfizer), or 14 days after receiving a 1-dose vaccine (J&J). Individuals who do not receive their final vaccine dose by Sunday, May 2, will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test administered in the timeframes listed above in order to access tickets.

Results from a PCR or antigen COVID-19 test will be accepted. Antibody tests will not be accepted.

    Limited on-campus testing opportunities

Limited antigen (Binax Now) rapid COVID-19 testing will be available on campus on Saturday and Sunday, May 15 and 16, for graduates and guests. Registration will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Information on how and when to register will be shared later this month.

Due to the limited number of on-campus testing appointments that will be available, students and guests who will not be fully vaccinated by May 2 are strongly encouraged to make their own arrangements for testing following the timelines and guidelines listed above.

Submitting Test Results and Vaccination Records

Students who are fully vaccinated as defined above can upload their vaccination record to CoVerified as they are available.

Detailed instructions for uploading guests’ test results and vaccination records will be provided soon. Tickets will not be released until proof of testing/vaccination is accepted and approved. Please note that individuals who have tested positive since February 16, 2021, will be able to submit their positive test result.

Thank you for your commitment to keeping your classmates and guests healthy and safe.

    Sincerely,

    The Commencement Committee

  • Tuesday, Feb. 23: Update on Spring 2021 Commencement

On Tuesday, Feb. 23, the following email was sent to candidates for spring 2021 commencement:

    Dear Class of 2021,

We are pleased to announce, based on the latest health guidance and State of Connecticut regulations, that we are expecting to be able to allow each graduate to have two ticketed guests in person at our Spring Commencement ceremonies on Monday, May 17, at the Harbor Yard Amphitheater in Bridgeport. Details on reserving tickets will be shared in the near future.

We are planning to hold morning and afternoon ceremonies on Monday, May 17. The 11 a.m. ceremony would be for graduates of our College of Arts and Sciences, School of Health Sciences, and the Tagliatela College of Engineering. The 4 p.m. ceremony would be for graduates of the Pompea College of Business and the Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences.

It is important for us to note that moving forward with our plans for Commencement will be based on the public health conditions at that time and, in particular, statewide policies and regulations that are in place.

We are working with the student leaders of the Class of 2021 and the Graduate Student Council as well as the COVID Task Force to plan Commencement, and we will provide updates as necessary. Please continue to be on the lookout for emails from the Commencement Committee, and be sure to regularly visit the Commencement page on myCharger for the latest information.

Ultimately, the paramount consideration in moving forward with our plans will be ensuring the health and well-being of all graduates and your guests. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and the flexibility that you have continued to illustrate as we all work together to respond to the impact of the pandemic.

    Sincerely,
    The Commencement Committee

  • Thursday, Feb. 18: Commencement is coming - Order your regalia now!

On Thursday, Feb. 18, the following email was sent to candidates for spring 2021 commencement:

    Dear Class of 2021,

We are writing to inform you that you can begin ordering your regalia for Commencement.

The University has arranged to have your caps, gowns, tassels (and hoods for master’s degree and Ph.D. candidates) shipped directly to your homes from Jostens. You can order your regalia by visiting the Jostens website. All orders must be received by Friday, March 26.

Regalia will NOT be available for pick up from the Campus Bookstore nor will it be available on site should we be able to hold an in-person Commencement. Graduates are required to have regalia to be able to participate in an in-person ceremony or any filmed Commencement events.

There is no charge for the regalia or for it to be shipped to your home. The process to order is quick and easy and will ensure that you receive appropriately sized regalia and that master’s degree candidates receive the proper hood for their individual degrees. (The attached file has quick tips on navigating the ordering website.)

    Additional important information:

    • Honors cords, stoles, medals and other Commencement items will be distributed by the individual offices that oversee them. These will not be available for order on the Jostens website.
      • Earned Latin honor cords will be distributed by the Registrar’s Office to students who qualify. (Please note that due to the timing of the ceremony, honors designations will be based on your grades at the end of your most recent term prior to the spring 2021 semester.)
      • Students who wish to order a stole that highlights involvement in one of the University’s experiential education pillars (Study Abroad, Internship, Academic Service-Learning, or Faculty-Mentored Research) will be able to order those online directly from the University of New Haven bookstore and should place those orders no later than March 26.
      • All other organization recognitions (Greek Life, Legacy cords, Philanthropy cords to recognize Senior gifts, Athletics, etc.) will be distributed directly by the relevant academic schools/colleges, organizations, or departments.
    • Please note that diplomas will be mailed this summer, once all degree audits are completed, to the address provided on your application for Commencement.

We will continue to share with you updates and information from this email account, and we look forward to celebrating all of you and your many accomplishments.

    Go Chargers!

  • Monday, Feb. 8: Update on Spring Commencement Date and Venue

On Monday, Feb. 8, the following email was sent to candidates for spring 2021 commencement:

    Dear Class of 2021,

We are writing to provide you an update on Spring Commencement. As you can imagine, planning an event of this scale during such a dynamic time does pose some challenges. Above all, though, we are committed to creating a ceremony that is befitting of all you have achieved as Chargers.

We would like to thank those who joined us for a Commencement Forum last week with the presidents of the Class of 2021 and the Graduate Student Council and members of the administration. A recording of that forum is available here if anyone missed it.

At this time, we are pleased to announce that Commencement is scheduled to take place on Monday, May 17, at the Harbor Yard Amphitheater in Bridgeport. Please note that this is a new date and venue than what was previously listed in the academic calendar. We made the decision to move to this larger outdoor facility to maximize the opportunities we have to safely celebrate your Commencement.

We are currently considering several options. The ultimate decision will be made based on local and state public health guidance and in consultation with the University’s COVID Task Force.

    • An in-person ceremony with a to-be-determined number of guests
    • An in-person ceremony with graduates only that would be live streamed for family, friends, and guests
    • An entirely virtual ceremony

We will continue to keep you updated on the planning process. All information will be sent to your University email and posted on the Commencement page on MyCharger. In the meantime, we encourage you to share any ideas you have for Commencement, or any potential celebratory events leading up to Commencement, with either ClassOf2021@newhaven.edu or GSCPresident@newhaven.edu.

As always, thank you for your continued resilience and resolve, and we wish you an enjoyable and successful Spring 2021 semester.

    Sincerely,
    The Commencement Committee
