About Stephen
Stephen Charles Smith is Senior Lecturer and Coordinator of the Interior Design program at the University of New Haven. He is also principal of Stephen Charles Smith Architects, founded in 2017, and Coordinator of the Architecture Summer Institute at the University of Hartford. He has taught a number of different courses including: Design Studio, Construction Documents, Materials and Methods, Building Codes, Building Systems, AutoCAD, Revit, Digital Tools, Visual Communication, and Ornament/Fabrication in Design. Stephen was previously a Visiting Assistant Professor and Graduate Program Director in the Architecture Department at the University of Hartford. He has also taught Architecture at Barnard College in New York City, Harlem Academy, and has been an invited design critic at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn.
Stephen earned a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Virginia Tech in 2009 and a Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University in 2017. He is a Registered Architect and Interior Designer, a LEED AP, and a member of AIA (American Institute of Architects), NCARB (National Council of Architectural Registration Boards), and IDEC (Interior Design Educators Council). At AIA CT, Stephen was Chair of the Emerging Architectural Community Committee, served on the Intern Task Force, and was a member of the Board of Directors from 2010-2011. Stephen has also sat on the Board of Directors of the ACE (Architecture, Construction, Engineering) Mentor Program in New Haven from 2010-2015.
Prior to starting his own practice, Stephen was a Designer, Architect, and Project Manager at several leading architecture firms for over 10 years, including Rafael Vinoly Architects in New York, NY and Silver/Petrucelli + Associates in Hamden, CT. He has extensive experience across a broad range of building types and scales: private residential, multi-family housing, high-end residential towers, retail, mixed-use, historic preservation, commercial interiors, cultural facilities, government offices, banks, libraries, schools and educational buildings, fire/emergency response, corporate headquarters, hotels, and furniture design.
