The University of New Haven paves the way in esports academics in the United States and offers the country's first graduate degree program in this burgeoning field. Now, high school students will get the opportunity to garner that same experience. The Esports Academy will focus on preparing students for the business of esports with an emphasis on academics and competitive gameplay exploration and strategy.

Academically, this program will help you identify key opportunities for career growth and development in esports. Particular attention will be paid to key topics in the esports business, where a tremendous number of career opportunities are arising.

Students should come ready to participate in group activities and guest lectures delving into such areas as:

  • Project management
  • Talent management
  • Livestreaming
  • Product development
  • Media
  • Marketing
  • Event organization
  • Athlete health
  • Esports integrity

Competitively, this program will focus on exploring various esports genres and familiarizing students with the leading titles in the industry, including: League of Legends, Valorant, and Rocket League. Students will get the opportunity to explore these titles and understand their basic mechanics and gameplay. University of New Haven faculty will go over multiple topics regarding competitive play such as: mechanical training, decision making, demo review, utility use, and more! You will take a step into the competitive and team environment that is required to be successful in esports. We will go over all the important mindsets and overall mentality required to take visible steps in skill within competitive gameplay, and talk over the importance of wellness, teamwork, leadership, and communication.

Faculty will talk about the intangibles of esports and how students can use their hours of gaming to build their resume and career. The program will dive into how "mental" plays a role in competition and how you interact with your team. Faculty will go over what schools, directors, and coaches look for when recruiting players into their programs and the best ways to receive scholarships for esports.

Participants who successfully complete the Esports Academy will earn three University of New Haven college credits, which is equivalent to the University’s Esports Basics (SMGT 2240) course.

Requirements

Students should be entering 10-12th grades for the 2022-23 academic year.
