WEST HAVEN, CONN. – Students in the music industry program at the University of New Haven have launched a new independent record label – and it is searching for local artists to promote.
The label, Purebred Records, will initially be funded by the UNH College of Arts and Sciences.
The idea of establishing a student-run record label was started by Douglas Foley, a junior from Washington, N.J., who saw it as a way to take advantage of the expertise of UNH faculty members who have extensive experience as professional musicians and music producers.
Foley, who began working on this concept as a freshman, said the project began with an idea that grew into a class.
The artwork above was designed by UNH student Ashley Niro ’12, of New Haven, a graphic design major.
“UNH is a school with a reputable music industry program and a focus on experiential education,” said Foley. “So I thought it was a perfect match to begin a record label.”
The name of the label refers indirectly to the UNH horse mascot, Charlie the Charger.
UNH Music Industry Professor Murray Krugman, a former record producer and industry veteran with Columbia Records, is advising the students. He was responsible for producing hit records for Blue Oyster Cult and the punk rock group the Dictators, among others. He also is the owner of Silverwolf Records, which distributes 150 titles.
The label will begin by licensing pre-recorded material from various music groups, said Robert Bellach, a senior from LaGrangeville, N.Y., who is on the marketing committee for Purebred Records. “In the future, we hope to work with the sound recording faculty and sound recording majors, and produce the work in our on-campus recording studios,” he said.
The label is interested in promoting local musicians. The students plan to use the Internet to do global marketing and networking, and will make the music they produce available for purchase digitally. “We are hoping to work with bands that already have a fan base so we can tap into their network to promote new work,” Bellach said.
“If you are an un-signed musician in the New Haven area that has a growing fan base and wants to move to the next level, we can help. If you are a listener and lover of music, we can provide you with some great local music,” he said.
Bellach notes that the students working for the label are well aware of the competitive market they face. “The music industry has always been competitive, but it is even more competitive now because we are part of a digital age where dozens of entertainment entities are vying for attention all at once,” he said. “We plan to make a name for ourselves by keeping the main focus on local, regional, and UNH student music acts. This is a niche that can become a distinct brand identity.”
