WEST HAVEN, CONN. -- Laura Reid, owner and president of the Fish Mart in West Haven, will speak on “Family Business Pros & Cons” on Feb. 7 at 7:45 a.m.

Her talk, part of the UNH College of Business CEO Breakfast Series, will take place in the Bartels Student Center on UNH’s main campus, 300 Boston Post Road. The event is free and open to the public.

Reid, who received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from UNH in 1975, worked at the Fish Mart while a college student.  A wholesale business in southern New Haven that at the time sold aquarium fish and other aquatics to pet stores, the company began to flounder in 1980. Reid purchased the business for $1and assumed nearly $200,000 in debt. She received a Distinguished Alumni Award in 2002 from UNH.

It took six years for her to get the business out of debt and buy a building at 28 Richards St. in West Haven.  The business began growing and Reid was able to put an addition on the building, doubling the square footage. Over the years, the delivery territory was expanded to include most of the Northeast.  The stock was expanded to also include birds, reptiles and companion animals such as gerbils and hamsters.

Fish Mart is known as an industry leader for its state-of-the-art aquatic life support systems and companion animal housing as well as outstanding customer service.

Reid also has served as president and legislative liaison of the state’s pet trade association and is an active member of the Board of Directors of the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council, the national pet trade association.

In 2001, she received the prestigious Small Business Association Connecticut State Business Person of the Year award.

Reid has served as an elected member of the Boards of Selectmen, Education, and Planning and Zoning in Orange, Conn. She was a founder and member of the Orange Economic Development Corporation and is the past president of the New England Ballet Company. Reid also has served on the UNH Board of Governors.
