General Information about OPT

  1. What is optional practical training?

    OPT is training that is directly related to the student's major area of study.  It is intended to provide the students with practical experience in their field of study during or upon completion of their degree program.

  2. Who is eligible for OPT?

    F-1 students who attended the university on a full time basis for one academic year may be authorized upto 12  months of OPT.  However, F-1 students who have one year or more of full time curricular practical training are not eligible for OPT for that degree.

  3. What is STEM OPT extension?

    According to the new OPT regulations, the 12-month limit on F-1 OPT is extended by 17 months, for a total of 29 months.  This regulation is applicable for students holding degrees in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) fields.
