Enhanced Learning Communities

Where You Live and Learn — From Exams To Xbox!

In keeping with the University’s focus on experiential education, we created many different Enhanced Learning Communities, or ELCs for short. Not only will your ELC immerse you in true collaborative learning with a group of your fellow first-year students, but it will also take you beyond the classroom into the world. ELCs also participate in field trips, guest lectures, service-learning projects, barbecues, and much more.

There are two Enhanced Learning Community types that you can choose to participate in: Residential Learning Communities (RLCs) or Living Learning Communities (LLCs). Residential Learning Communities provide first-year students the opportunity to live together with students who share a common academic major. Living Learning Communities provide first-year students the opportunity to live together with students who share a common course of study or particular interest.

Your ELC hallmates become your classmates as well, giving you a tight-knit group to study and discuss issues with, get advice from, and even challenge to all-night Xbox tournaments. Or PlayStation, if you prefer!

How to Apply

Admittance into the Enhanced Learning Communities at the University of New Haven is limited, and interested students may select their ELC of choice in the New Student Road Map. The New Student Road Map will be available for first-year students who have officially enrolled and deposited for the fall.

Students will be notified of their acceptance into the program on a rolling basis.

Our Enhanced Learning Communities
  • ELC Benefits

Your roommate(s) is in the same major or area of interest that you are in. Your Resident Assistant — an upperclass student — is in the same area as well. You have one-on-one advisement with your ELC faculty advisor — right in your residence hall.

Special trips are tailored to the interests of students in your ELC.

  • Student Experiences
I like the LLC because a large portion of the forensic science majors are grouped together on one floor. Since we're all together, it's easy to form study groups, considering many of us are in the same classes. I also enjoy the monthly activities put on by the faculty as well as the fact that we get to form a connection with professors that transcends both the teacher/student and adviser/student relationships.

The LLC is an amazing tool that I have enjoyed using. I feel that everyone in the LLC has made a bond, kind of like a family. Each of us is willing to help one another if we can. We help each other study a lot because we all understand the course load.
