What Is an Actuary?

An actuary measures and manages risk for insurance businesses so they can make sound and strategic decisions. Through the University of New Haven's B.S. in Actuarial and Mathematical Sciences, you will learn to use mathematical, probabilistic, and statistical tools to evaluate future risk and contingent events to aid in decision-making. Your required courses cover the syllabus for Exams P and FM, the first two professional exams, and the program is recognized by the Society of Actuaries and the Casualty Actuarial Society.

Can I Be an Actuary If I'm Good at Math?

You will strengthen both your quantitative and analytical thinking and be engaged and challenged by problems, puzzles, and patterns: calculus through multivariable, linear algebra, probability, statistical learning, and computing. Graduates apply mathematical reasoning to fields like operations research, economics, business, finance, and engineering, attend graduate school in related fields, or continue into the University's M.S. in Artificial Intelligence.

7 Reasons to Choose the University of New Haven for Actuarial and Mathematical Sciences

  1. Actuarial exam preparation and financial support. The first two actuarial exams sit inside the required courses. Through coursework and faculty seminars, we prepare you for the first professional exams that actuaries take in the early stages of their career. We also reimburse the exam fee when you pass.
  2. The two professional organizations recognize the program. SOA UCAP Introductory Curriculum recognition and CAS University Recognition Program status, from the two bodies that govern the field and are recognized worldwide.
  3. Our location. Less than an hour away from Hartford, renowned hub of insurance companies and actuarial consulting firms, you will have opportunities for exceptional internships, and the job offers that follow.
  1. It is a mathematics degree. Linear algebra, differential equations, and advanced mathematics electives are required, and our faculty bring extensive research and teaching experience covering a wide range of topics from both pure and applied mathematics.
  2. Earn your B.S. and M.S. in five years. Qualified students could continue into the University's M.S. in Artificial Intelligence.
  3. Small class sizes. Students receive a high degree of one-on-one attention and mentoring from faculty.
  4. Tutoring opportunities. You will have opportunities for employment as a tutor in The Math Zone. This innovative learning center combines direct teaching with e-learning technology.

This program leads to success

The University of New Haven's B.S. in Actuarial and Mathematical Sciences delivers the mathematical background needed to pursue a successful career as an actuary, financial analyst, or market research analyst upon graduation.

Through the program, you will learn to:

  • solve problems involving essential mathematical computations
  • employ various computational software
  • use mathematical, probabilistic, and statistical tools to evaluate future risk and contingent events
  • demonstrate a command of advanced mathematical topics
  • acquire the business skills that businesses and government agencies seek

Our location = a high probability of phenomenal internships and job offers

Hartford, Connecticut — legendary hub of major insurance companies and actuarial consulting firms — is only 40 minutes away. Aetna, Travelers, The Hartford, and United Healthcare, and other insurers, all call Hartford home. Students will have exciting opportunities to intern at these famous firms and attract the notice of managers looking for full-time employees.

Recognized by the profession's two governing bodies

Two actuarial organizations — the Society of Actuaries (SOA) and the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) — administer a series of nine exams on various topics of actuarial science. It is expected, though not required, for a professional actuary to pass these exams. Typically, students will be competitive in the entry-level actuary job market after having passed one to three exams. Our program has courses and exam prep seminars to ready you for the first three exams.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects that the average growth rate for all occupations combined over the same 2025–2035 window will be just 3.5%. By comparison, the actuarial field is expanding at nearly triple the national average pace. Actuarial science is a smaller field in comparison to others, but new emerging risks and the need to develop, price, and evaluate new insurance products will put this elite group of professionals on the must-have list for companies throughout the world. SOA and CAS credentials are recognized worldwide.

SOA or CAS? Your Choice

Two actuarial organizations, the Society of Actuaries (SOA) and the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS), require members to pass a series of exams. Fortunately, you can start working in an entry-level actuarial role after having passed one to three exams. The SOA represents actuaries working in a range of fields, including life and health insurance, investment and finance, retirement and pensions, and risk management. CAS actuaries work with property and casualty insurance.
