FLM371 MODERN SOCIAL DILEMMA IN FRANCOPHONE FILM

A cinematographic investigation of the way Francophone film represents and questions contemporary social issues in France, this course deals with such topics as decolonization; identities tied to class, race and ethnicity; immigrant minorities and marginalization; gender politics; and the mass unemployment that has accompanied the social and economic crises since the 1980s. FLM372FLR MODERN ITALIAN CINEMA

A comprehensive overview and analysis of Italian cinema, from its beginnings to the current era, this course examines the ways in which Italian cinema reflects the evolution of modern Italy, the changing social, political, economic and cultural developments which characterize modern Italian life. It also focuses on the significance of the uniquely Italian phenomenon of Neo-Realism. Prerequisite: some knowledge of Italian History from WWI until present times would be helpful. FLM373 LE SEPTIÈME ART: A SURVEY OF FRENCH FILM

Using critical, historical and sociological approaches to French cinema, this course surveys French cinema and filmmaking from the first projections of the Lumière brothers to Hazanavicius’ 2012 Oscar-winning film l’Artiste. Prerequisites: None. Language of instruction: English. Credits: 3
