About Sarbjeet
Sarbjeet Kaur, a practitioner in residence in forensic science, is the interim director of the Center for Forensic Investigations of Trafficking in Persons at the University of New Haven.
A fifth-year doctoral candidate in the Criminal Justice Department at the University of New Haven, her doctoral research investigates human trafficking issues, prosecutorial challenges in human trafficking cases, and connections between human trafficking and terrorism. Her research takes a multidisciplinary approach that encompasses criminological theories and certain philosophical concepts in terms of gender-power dynamics, criminal justice policy and response to human trafficking, and forensic investigations of human trafficking cases. Her dissertation chair is Paul Bleakley, Ph.D.
Sarbjeet has worked on multiple research projects/grants, including for the United Nations and the Connecticut Institute for Refugees and Immigrants (CIRI). She also conducted a qualitative study on prosecutorial challenges in human trafficking cases in the United States, using multiple stakeholders’ perspectives, including law enforcement, victim advocates and services, and prosecutors.
Sarbjeet has presented her research at the American Society of Criminology, the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, and the University of Cambridge. Her work has been published in Countering Terrorist and Criminal Financing; Evidence-Based Professionals Quarterly; and the Indian Journal of Physical Anthropology & Human Genetics.
Sarbjeet joined the University of New Haven in 2016 as a graduate student in the forensic technology graduate program. Upon completing her master’s degree in 2018, she was accepted into the University’s Ph.D. program in criminal justice and started her first assignment as a research consultant for the University’s Office of International Criminal Justice and Security.
She is a member of the American Society of Criminology, the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, the American Political Science Association, and the International Studies Association.
