Celebrating International Alumni's Employment Success in Sport Management

For Ilias Giannakopoulos '24 M.S., his journey studying sport management was about much more than academic achievements. "Simply attending classes isn't enough to stand out in such a competitive field," he said. "One piece of advice that truly resonated with me came from Ceyda Mumcu, Ph.D.: always be proactive and go the extra mile."

In a fiercely competitive job market, the 2024 international cohort of the University of New Haven's M.S. in Sport Management program, with a STEM-designated Business Analytics concentration achieved an extraordinary milestone: 100% employment upon graduation. This achievement reflects not only the students' resilience but also the value of the University's forward-thinking curriculum, strong faculty mentorship, and robust industry connections.

By pursuing unpaid internships, participating in student competitions, and seeking every opportunity to grow professionally, Giannakopoulos' efforts paid off, earning a position as an account executive with RevUp Property Representation. Reflecting on his experience, he emphasized the importance of engaging beyond the classroom: "These efforts not only built my skills but also significantly increased my visibility to potential employers."

For many in the cohort, the support of faculty members such as program coordinator Dr. Mumcu proved invaluable. Giannakopoulos credited her proactive guidance and expansive network for helping him secure his current, full-time position. "She was always there to share opportunities and provide advice," he said. "Her support laid the foundation for my career."

For Param Nagda '24 M.S., persistence and resilience were key. "I started applying for jobs almost a year before graduation," he shared. "The job market was difficult, but I succeeded because I kept going and didn't let rejections discourage me."

Nagda's strategy combined relentless networking and leveraging platforms such as LinkedIn to build professional connections. As an international student, he faced additional challenges, including visa sponsorship requirements. Despite these obstacles, he found success by showcasing his unique expertise in analytics and data management.

"A lot of the work I undertake involves analyzing data for high-profile clients, including Fortune 100 companies and professional sports teams," explained Nagda, an analytics consultant for Guardian Jet. "The skills I gained through the program prepared me to handle these responsibilities with confidence."

He highlighted the importance of staying connected with the University's faculty and alumni network. "The faculty introduced me to graduates of the program and possible job opportunities," he said. "Their advice and connections helped me navigate the industry and present myself as a marketable candidate."

Nagda encouraged current students to remain steadfast in their efforts. "Keep networking and applying, even if the market situation isn't ideal," he advised. "Opportunities will come your way if you don't give up."

Karishma Sharma '24 M.S. had an intense but rewarding experience, applying to nearly 2,000 positions, attending approximately 60 interviews, and networking extensively through LinkedIn. Her persistence paid off when she secured a role that aligned perfectly with her goals.

"Before each interview, I spent hours researching the company and preparing thoughtful questions," Sharma recalled. "The process can sometimes feel repetitive and discouraging, but it only takes one company to believe in you."

Sharma's knowledge of diverse sports helped her stand out during interviews. She also emphasized the role of mentorship in her journey, particularly the support provided by Dr. Mumcu. "Her guidance was instrumental in shaping my career path," Sharma said. "She helped me prepare for challenges unique to international students and encouraged me to think strategically about my job search."

The support of faculty, combined with the program's emphasis on analytics, proved transformative for Sharma and her peers. "The program's integration of theory and hands-on practice gave me the tools to succeed," noted Sharma, manager of licenses and acquisitions for basketball at Panini America. "It prepared us not just to enter the workforce, but to thrive in it."

Sharma's advice to future graduates underscores the importance of determination. "Don't let the challenges discourage you," she said. "Keep learning, keep growing, and remember, it only takes one yes."

Reflecting on the journey, Giannakopoulos praised the caliber of his peers. "Within the program, I met people who are going to be the next leaders of the sports industry," he said.

Giannakopoulos and the fellow members of his cohort each demonstrated that persistence, strategic networking, and leveraging academic resources can pave the way to professional success.

"The journey isn't easy, but it's worth it," Sharma concluded. "We're proud to represent the University and show what's possible when you combine determination with the right support system."
