The University of New Haven’s Police Department is scheduled for an on-site assessment on Tuesday, May 8, as part of an effort to achieve Tier II accreditation from the State of Connecticut Police Officer Standards and Training Council.
Last year, the police department was the first at a private college or university in Connecticut to achieve Tier I accreditation. Only one-third of the police departments in Connecticut are accredited.
Police departments seeking accreditation must demonstrate that they have comprehensive, well-thought out directives; provide managers with fact-based, informed management decisions; have a preparedness program to address natural or man-made critical incidents; and strive for an excellent relationship with the community are accountable for their actions.
As part of the on-site assessment, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments. Comments can be mailed to William E. Tanner, III, POSTC Accreditation Division at 285 Preston Ave. Meriden, Connecticut 06450, or submitted by telephone at 203-427-2602, by fax at 203-238-6643, or by email Accreditation.Compliance@ct.gov. Those emailing comments should include the name of the agency in the subject line of the email.
Copies of the standards are available at the University Police Department. For more information, contact Marina Davila at 203-932-7014.
