Dear Members of the University Community,
I am writing with the heartbreaking news that two University of New Haven graduate students were killed in an automobile accident early this morning in Massachusetts. Four other University of New Haven graduate students, passengers in the same vehicle, were injured and are receiving medical care in a Massachusetts hospital.
A seventh passenger in the minivan, a student from another university, was also killed in the accident on Route 7 near Sheffield, MA. Authorities in Massachusetts are conducting an investigation into the cause of the crash.
Sai Narasimha Patamsetti, 22, a business analytics graduate student from Rajahmundry Urban, India, and Pavani Gullapally, 22, a civil engineering graduate student from Warangal, India, succumbed to injuries suffered in the crash. We will pass along information on the injured students on Wednesday when we receive additional details from the Massachusetts authorities.
Please keep your fellow classmates in your thoughts and prayers this evening. It is at times like this that members of our community can offer strength and comfort to each other.
Grief counseling is available through the University’s Counseling and Psychological Services Office. Students can call to make appointments or seek support by calling 203-932-7333. The Dean of Students office is also available to students at 203-932-7176 or by email at DeanOfStudents@newhaven.edu. Faculty and staff members can click here for available support through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
We will share details on arrangements for celebrating the lives of Pavani and Sai when they are finalized by their families. Details will be shared soon for an on-campus memorial.
Please join me in extending our heartfelt condolences to the parents, family, friends, and classmates of Pavani and Sai, and in keeping all of the students involved in your thoughts.
Sincerely,
Ophelie Rowe-Allen, Ed.D.
Dean of Students
