Master of Science InConstruction Engineering and Management

What turns a construction project into a successfully completed construction project? A phenomenal construction manager. Our program gives you the knowledge, practical experience, and leadership abilities to transform plans on paper into flawless, working realities.

Engineer the success of construction projects

In an increasingly complex industry, the ultimate success of every civil engineering project today rests on the same pillar of strength — a knowledgeable, effective, construction manager. This skilled leader has the creative, solution-oriented, science-based abilities of an engineer but can manage the tough business end of projects — the interlocking realities of planning, estimating, scheduling, the plethora of safety regulations, risk management, and the pressing issue of sustainability.

With our M.S. in Construction Engineering and Management program, you will acquire those advanced managerial skills to become the linchpin that holds construction projects — large and small — together and running smoothly. There is a growing demand for professionals with these skills. Those who possess them have a significant competitive edge, with greatly enhanced career possibilities.

A program that builds a high-rise career

You’ll move to the top levels of your career field thanks to the specialized training the program provides. Your skillset will include expertise in:

  • Building Information Modeling (BIM) software
  • Construction engineering and management, planning, and estimating
  • Construction law, regulations, and risk management as well as construction safety and inspection standards
  • Sustainability and green building
  • Urban planning and highway engineering
  • Analyzing the business aspects of construction, such as financial management and contract administration

You’ll polish your communication skills as well so that you can communicate the wealth of advanced technical and business information in your knowledge arsenal through both oral and written means.

The practical experience that spells "professionalism" on your résumé

On-site learning at a construction project is built into the program, as nothing says “ready, willing, and able” to potential employers as first-hand experience with what goes on at a site. Through targeted, relevant internships, students will be closely involved in inspections, auditing for compliance with design and safety guidelines, and other challenging management issues.

The close contact with construction companies doesn’t end with the internship. The program provides supportive connections to various industries, communities, and government entities, including construction and engineering firms, construction project management companies, building materials manufacturers and suppliers, and governmental agencies responsible for regulating and enforcing construction regulations — all potential employers, post graduation.

Faculty-mentored research opportunities take students’ skill and knowledge to a higher level as well. The program also fosters collaborations with other universities and research institutions, giving students a first-hand look at the latest advancements and trends in construction management research and practice.

Selected Courses and Programs
  • This course covers the application of network analogy to project planning and scheduling; resource, time, and financial management; computer applications; and the process of coordinating numerous and often complex elements to erect a structure and satisfy the needs of a construction project.

  • In this course, students study the concepts of financial accounting and economics, with emphasis on the construction industry. Topics covered include financial statements, accounting concepts, project accounting methods, and the nature of project costs. Also featured: a case study of a major construction contractor and an examination of ownership structure, working capital, and the sources and uses of funds.

  • Students are exposed to project management skills from fields outside of construction in order to give them a well-rounded knowledge of management processes. Advanced topics of construction project management are brought to the forefront in this course to increase students’ knowledge in these areas and include estimating, cash flows, cost control, materials management, and safety related topics.

  • This course explores the principles of horizontal construction, advanced construction equipment and techniques, the methods used to investigate equipment productivity, and equipment application understanding. Fleet operations, maintenance programs, methods and procedures used to construct tunnels, roads, dams, and the excavation of buildings are also studied.

  • Students work in project teams to simulate engineering and construction processes for a real world project. In collaboration, they will model a building in Building Information Modeling (BIM) and prepare BIM-informed schedules and cost estimates by using advanced BIM solutions and their individual strengths. The team environment and mindset and the simulation of real world practices help develop creative, innovative practitioners.
