Master of Public Health

At the heart of the MPH program are more than 25 School of Health Science academics and practitioners who bring their expertise and experience to the classroom. Our multi-disciplinary faculty will advise and mentor you on your public health career path every step of the way.

The internationally recognized faculty provide learning in the classroom, and they also focus on the important learning that happens across our campus and beyond through research experiences, student organizations, and public health organizations. What this means to you is access to some of the best minds and most current research and hands-on learning in public health today.

As a University of New Haven MPH candidate, you will experience 21st century public health firsthand. Every student will complete at least one 150-hour fieldwork internship placement in a public health organization – such as at a hospital, community health center, international NGO, or local public health department – or complete a capstone project. This hands-on experience is an opportunity to demonstrate all the knowledge and skills you have developed as an MPH student and to add a major project to your resume.

Whether completing the internship or capstone course, students will devote themselves to addressing a health problem or issue on campus or in the surrounding community.

Faculty will help students prepare for and find those experiences using their professional connections throughout the region.

Choose one of four tracks tailored to your professional interests and strengths to specialize your approach to public health:

• Global Health: Explore the challenges of globalization and health equity around the world, and how ethics and human rights shape global health-focused research, programs, and policies. Design, implement, and evaluate global health programs to provide sustainable solutions for public health at local, national, and international levels.
• Health Education and Promotion: Learn how to design, plan, implement and evaluate effective health education practices and interventions to address public health challenges and facilitate behavioral changes to improve population health.
• Health Informatics: Gain proficiency in the design, development, adoption, and application of IT-based innovations in public health delivery, management, and planning. Informatics is a collaborative activity that involves people, processes, and technologies to produce and use data for better decision-making.
• General: A customizable track for students interested in a generalist approach to public health. All core courses are completed while the remaining courses are planned under faculty advisement to the student’s interests.

Students can start the program in either the fall or spring semester and complete their coursework in two years (full-time), on a part-time basis through evening classes, or through our dual degree BS/MPH programs. This option allows you to earn both your BS and your MPH in five years. Generally, qualified students are accepted into a one of these programs in their junior year.

This program is STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math)-designated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, designed to instill in our students the technical expertise that employers told us they are looking for in their future hires.

STEM-designation also enables international graduates to remain in the United States for an additional 24 months after graduation to receive training through work experience.
