The mission of University of New Haven’s Master of Public Health (MPH) program is to prepare healthcare professionals who prevent disease, promote health, and protect the well-being of the public through education, practice, research, and service.

Through our program, you will gain the leadership skills, innovative mindset, and background in evidence-based decision-making that are required to excel in the field of public health. You will also curate the professional, social, ethical, and political understanding of health you need to succeed from in- and out-of-the-classroom experiences. As a student you will learn public health by doing public health.

Our core curriculum provides the broad foundation in key areas including epidemiology, biostatistics, social and behavioral sciences, healthcare administration, and environmental health, along with more advanced coursework focusing on the range of issues relevant to public health today, including global health, healthcare leadership, public health ethics, public health law, and public health practice, planning, and evaluation.

Our MPH program is one of the first in the country to be STEM designated by the federal government, which enables international graduates to remain in the United States for an additional 24 months after graduation to receive training through work experience.

All of your learning experiences will enable you to develop broad technical skills as well as the organizational competencies needed to thrive in a wide range of settings in which public health professionals work, including state and local government, non-governmental organizations, hospitals, research institutions, policy-making institutions, and community health programs, among others.

Sample job titles include health information specialist, hospital administrator, community health program manager, county public health director, health promotion/education specialist, public health nutritionist, public health administrator, consultant, data analyst, research associate, and quality improvement specialist, among many others.

The 42-credit program – that you can pursue as a full-time or part-time student, or through our dual degree BS/MPH programs – delivers broad and practical interdisciplinary training for students interested in non-clinical and allied health fields alike. You’ll have the option to pursue tracks in either global health; health education and promotion; or health informatics, or a customizable general track that you can map out with your adviser.

  • Our MPH delivers five competencies, all of which align with those established by the public health education accrediting body — the Council for Education in Public Health (CEPH). Developing these competencies will prepare you to sit for the Certified in Public Health exam, which is offered through the National Board of Public Health Examiners (NBPHE).

  • The MPH Program reviews applications holistically, considering a wide range of factors including previous GPA, work experience, statement of purpose, and letters of recommendation. Most students who matriculate to the MPH Program have undergraduate GPAs of 3.0 or higher.

    Admissions Criteria and Application Materials

    No GRE or GMAT score is required to apply to the MPH Program.

    • 3.0 undergraduate GPA or higher from an accredited institution of higher learning
    • 1-2 page statement of purpose
    • Two letters of recommendation (professional or academic references only)
    • Current resume or CV
    • Current TOEFL or other language exam score (if non-native English speaker)

The Women Executives in Healthcare Prize Fund recognizes an outstanding female graduate student enrolled in the School of Health Sciences, with preference given to a student in the Masters of Healthcare Administration or Masters of Public Health programs. Selection is based on general academic excellence and review of a student-submitted essay outlining career aspirations in healthcare management. Selected Courses

  • This course introduces research methods and the fundamental statistics needed to succeed in today’s public health organizations. The course follows a practical approach that allows the student to learn key statistical principles and learn ways to effectively convey data and results using Excel. This course covers both quantitative and qualitative research methods used in public health.

  • This course introduces students to the challenges on health equity around the world, with a focus on developing and low-income countries. Topics discussed will include rates of infectious disease and lack of medical care. In addition, students will discuss the effects of the healthy versus unhealthy environment on health. The course will introduce the challenges faced in providing shelter, sanitation, clean water, and healthy food to reduce the global burden of disease. The course will also explain the role of governments, ministries of health, and world health organizations in health equity.

  • This course introduces students to a social, ecological, and a life-course perspective of population health. Challenges students to address societal and structural forces such as socioeconomic position, racial, ethnic, and gender sources of inequality, as well as interpersonal processes reflected in norms, networks, and social capital. This course focuses on behavior, communication, decision-making, and health outcomes at the individual, family and community levels.

  • This course will examine the roles and uses of health information technology in healthcare and the tools and techniques used to identify, analyze, and communicate healthcare data.
